The Network on Written Language and Literacy was launched in 1991 and was completed in 1994.
The Chairman was Professor Clotilde Pontecorvo from the University of Rome "La Sapienza".

The Network on Written Language and Literacy focuses on the cross-cultural and cross-linguistic continuities, similarities and differences between orality and literacy. It studies children's processes of learning to plan, generate and revise various kind of texts by using different kinds of knowledge; it describes and compares how in different cultures children's understanding and production of written language is affected by environmental and socio-cultural characteristics.
