In 1997, the LESC strengthened its voice in the life and environmental sciences by adding the European Environmental Research Organisation (EERO) subcommittee on environmental pollution.
This subcommittee ensures that its proposals, which are assessed by LESC before being submitted to the Foundation's Member organisations, complement the ESF's broader environmental initiatives, its aim will be to enhance European collaboration in research related to processes, impacts and remedial measures associated with environmental pollution, with special reference to toxic chemicals and radionuclides.
The 1998 programme on Groundwater Pollution is the first product of this new subcommittee.
