Context
The Network on Population Ecology and Genetics was approved by the ESF Executive Council in September 1990, and it was completed by the end of 1993.
The Chairman of the Coordination Committee was Dr Pierre Jacquard of Montpellier.
Content and Structure
Population biology is the study of the genetic and physiological factors determining the dynamics of populations, and their potential for evolutionary change. The study considers both the individual level and the community.
The domain of the discipline includes a number of interrelated fields, two of which are at the centre of the Network on Population Ecology and Genetics: ecology, the study of the dynamics of populations in relations to their environment, and population genetics, the study of the dynamics of the genes that interact with the environment to determine the phenotype of individuals.
