Context
The Network on Transport, Communications and Mobility (NECTAR) is the third Network launched by the Executive Council, in January 1986, for a two year period. Then a five year phase 2 was launched for the period 1988-1992.
The Chairman of the Coordination Committee is Professor Peter Nijkamp of Amsterdam.
Content and Structure
The major objective of the Network on Transport, Communications and Mobility is to improve channels of communication and to promote the coordination of existing research efforts, focusing on multi-disciplinary social-science oriented to the transport field.
During phase 1 was made an inventory of European-wide trends in the transport and communications system, identifying socio-economic, technological, behavioural and policy elements. Phase 2 focused on four core research areas: barrier effects in transportation and communication; Europe 2020: socio-economic and spatial implications of NECTAR development; behaviour of users and supplies; NECTAR policy development. These four core research areas were adopted as focal points of transnational NECTAR research efforts and many workshops were held to stimulate European cooperation in the field.
