The Phase 1 of the Network on Insect-Plant Interactions was approved by the Executive Council in March 1990 for a period of two years, after an exploratory workshop held in September 1989. Although launched in the period when Phase 1 (two years) was frequently followed by a Phase 2 (three years) this scheme was not continued and the Network prepared a proposal to become a Scientific Programme.
The Chairman of the Coordination Committee of the Network was Professor Louis Schoonhoven of The Netherlands.

The Network on Insect-Plant Interactions focuses on problems concerning the detection and utilization of host plants by insects on one hand, and plant chemistry and physiological responses to insect damage on the other hand.
