Context
The Network on Polar Science (EPOS) was the fourth ESF Scientific Network, launched by the Executive Council in April 1986 for a two year Phase 1 period. At the end of Phase 1, the work continued in three ways: as the Phase 2 Network EPOS (European Polarstern Studies, 1988-1992) and as two Scientific Programmes, PONAM (Polar North Atlantic Margins) and GRIP (Greenland Ice Core Project).
The Chairman of the Coordination Committee was Professor Jarl-Ove Strömberg of the Kristineberg Marine Biological Station in Sweden.
Content and Structure
The activities of the Polar Science/EPOS Network are in the field of Antarctic marine ecology, mainly focused on three cruise legs in the Antarctic Ocean in the period October 1988 - March 1989 and subsequent analysis of the data obtained.The target for the expeditions was the area in the northern Weddell Sea and Scotia Sea, with the purpose of promoting the understanding of the ice-related biota and the flora and fauna in the upper water mass.
Workshop were held in the field of biological and bacterial activity in water underlying ice.
