Starting with the European Coal and Steel Community and then the European Atomic Energy Community, the six member states decided to establish a Common Market for all goods and services. This includes also rationalization and modernization of the coal and steel industry, creation of a common agricultural policy, promotion of the free movement of workers and, finally, a schedule for the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Animated diagrams and maps show how Europe was divided by barriers to trade, economy and movement of people. The European Community represents a new form of coexistence between peoples and may one day contribute to the emergence of a peaceful and united world.
