Content and Structure
Produced by the Information Service of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community, the film – consisting mainly of newsreel material from the early 1950s – is a retrospective of the events that marked the creation and the first years of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). It also describes its objectives, operations and activities as well as the functioning of the institutions of the ECSC: the High Authority and the Court of Justice. It includes an excerpt from the speech delivered by Robert Schuman, on May 9, 1950, to propose the creation of the ECSC, the signing of the treaty in Paris in April 1951, the speeches made by Jean Monnet in August 1952 during the inauguration of the ECSC High Authority, and in April 1953, on the eve of the opening of the European Common Market for Steel and Coal.
