The Network on "Silk: Properties and Production" was approved by the ESF Executive Council in September 1998 for a three-year period.
The Chairman was Professor Fritz Vollrath, from Department of Zoology, University of Aarhus.

Content and Structure

Abstract

The Network on "Silk: Properties and Production" investigates the structure and fabrication process of spider silks, focusing on: zoology; biochemistry, for composition of the materials; biophysics, for the mechanical structure of the materials; biotechnology, to examine cloning techniques for fabricating natural and artificial silk; material science, to study mechanical properties of polymers; biometrics, for production processes.

The dossier contains: Network proposal and research assessments; Fritz Vollrath’s CV; correspondence on the establishment of the Network and on the management of the Network. It contains documents concerning workshops and meetings:
