Context
Launched in 1988 at the CRE Conference of Warsaw, Copernicus (which stands for ‘COoperation Programme in Europe for Research on Nature and Industry through Coordinated University Studies’) is a CRE programme focused on promoting a better understanding of environmental issues within and outside the university community. Concentrating its activities around the areas of the Baltic and the Danube, the project created two specialized networks centered on these areas, which organized specialized courses. The most concrete aim of the program was to prepare interdisciplinary textbooks on environment and health, economics, and law.
Copernicus promoted the University Charter for Sustainable Development.
In 1999, it became a non-profit international association under German law, following the transfert of the secretariat from Geneva (CRE Secretariat) to Dortmund University in 1998.
