Context

Administrative and Biographical History

The Management seminars are the oldest service provided by the CRE to its members. Started in 1979, their purpose was to help newly-appointed heads of institutions to understand their role as university managers. With the fall of Berlin Wall in 1989 and the progressive disintegration of the European Eastern Block, a special focus was put on the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The seminars continued to be organised until the fusion of the CRE with the Confederation of European Union Rectors’ Conferences in 2001.

The Management seminars were co-organized by the CRE and the OECD/IMHE (Management of Higher Education Institutions of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development): the seminar speakers were selected under the academic direction of the professor John Davies and the organization was mostly handled by the CRE and the host universities. The seminars were financially self-supported thanks to a registration fee and the support of the host university, but were nevertheless sponsored by the CRE, the IMHE, the Council of Europe and the UNESCO.
