The Network was approved by the ESF Network Group in May 2002 for a three-year period.
The Chairman was Professor Kari Palonen, from University of Jyväskylä, Finland.

Content and Structure

Abstract

The Network studies the rise and growing acceptance of democracy during the 19th and 20th centuries in Europe, focusing on the differences between countries in the dating and rhythm of democratisation.

The dossier contains: Network proposal and research assessments; correspondence; final report.
Documents on the workshops: selection of participants; program and abstracts of the first workshop on "The formation of representative democracy",held in Malaga, on 10-11 Oct 2003; report on the activities, 2003; summary and reports of the workshop on "Democratisation and political rhetoric", held in Finland, on 28-29 May 2004; programme, summary, list of participants of the third workshop on "Representative democracy and the politics of gender", held in Torino, on 18-19 Feb 2005; summary and programme of the fourth workshop on "Temporalisation and professionalization of politics", held in Greifswald, on 27-28 May 2005; summary and programme of the fifth workshop on "Challenges to representative democracy", held in Copenhagen, on 16-17 Dec 2005.
