Content and Structure
At the beginning of 1952, the six member states of the European Coals and Steel Community discussed a European Defence Community (EDC) with a pan-European defence force including West German armed forces. This project is discussed by two friends who bring up the different advantages and disadvantages of such an international enterprise. Flashbacks deal with German history, the consequences of the Second World War and the successful political integration of West Germany into a European order which led also to the thriving reconstruction of the economy. The two friends even talk about the possibility of German reunification.
