The ESF action in the field of migration was suggested at a very early stage.Taking advantage of the availability of a fellowship granted by the Leverhulme Trust, the french Professor M. Oriol was entrusted with carrying out a survey of research in the field in Europe and to devise a programme for cooperative action.
The initiative concerns the execution of a programme dealing with the human and cultural aspects of international migration in Western Europe and has been pursued under two headings: a workshop programme concerning various aspects of the interaction of migrants with their environment; a research programme concerning the cultural identity of adolescents and young adults of the second generation of immigrants.
