Context

Administrative and Biographical History

Before the founding Conference of Gottigen in 1964, the CRE’s secretariat was divided between the Secretaire general de la Conference des Recteurs francais (R.Warnier) and the Generalsekretar der Westdeutschen Rektorkonferenz (J.Fischer). At the beginning of 1964, it was decided that the French section should act as the President’ Secretariat while the German section should be the sole responsible for the preparation of the Gottingen Conference. At Gottingen, it was decided that the choice for General Secretary and the location of the General Secretariat for the CRE would be decided later on. In the meantime, J. Fischer was the designated Secretary.

Foundation of the official secretariat occurred on the 1st of April 1965 in Geneva, after P.Ladame was elected General Secretary of the CRE in march 1965.

Content and Structure

Abstract

These files cover the period leading to the creation of the association (from before the founding Conference of Gottingen in 1964) up to and following slightly the second Conference of the association in 1969.

The files are ordered according to the Secretariat that produced them (whether it be the French General Secretariat, the West-German General Secretariat or the official CRE Secretariat of Geneva). The last files concern the finances of the CRE as well as information documents received by the Secretariat of the CRE in that time.

System of Arrangement

The original order of the files was kept in order to highlight the different work methods and activities of each Secretariat involved at the beginning of the CRE as an official association.

The general arrangement of the file is artificial, and was created afterwards so as to accommodate the different files from these various sources.
