Context
The CRE General Assembly was the governing body of the institution. Meeting every five years and open to one representative of each CRE universities, plus Board and Committee members and observers (who did not have voting rights), it reviewed the CRE administration and discussed topics of general academic interest. It had the power to amend CRE’s Constitution, to elect the President and the other Board members, to adopt a report of CRE activities and finances, to consider general policies and to treat the membership applications.
Content and Structure
Each session of the General Assemblies is documented by a group of files focusing on various topics (preparation, working sessions, business meeting, aftermath …). This series covers the period from the General Assembly of Gottingen (1964) to the last one held in Berlin in 1998 before the fusion with the Confederation of European Union Rectors’ Conference in 2001. The documents of the first two General Assemblies (Cambridge (1955) and Dijon (1959)), which led to the constitution of the CRE, were not part of the fonds.
The official languages of the CRE being English and French, the official documents (minutes, programmes, circulars...) are usually present in both languages, some are also present in German. In a less recurring way, the addresses and papers written produced for an Assembly can also be found in both languages.
