Initially, a combined gamma-ray/X-ray project known as COS-A satellite was envisaged. COS Group reckoned that the inclusion in the scientific payload of a sophisticated X-ray experiment was not performing. Another feasibility study (COS-B) was recommended. COS-B was very relevant in the study of extraterrestrial gamma radiation.
