Abstract

Within the memorandum of understanding between the Historical Archives of the European Union and the Municipality of Ventotene, the fourth workshop took place from 15 to 19 April 2024 at the Dante Alighieri comprehensive school on the Ventotene Island.
The activities were planned together with the teachers of the Ventotene school with the aim of giving continuity to the topics developed during the previous educational workshops held in October 2021, April 2022 and April 2023 concerning European civic education.
The educational project addressed the European institutions, starting from a reflection around the concept of the Table as a primary place of discussion and democratic debate at an institutional level, but also as a place for the development of an awareness of an active citizenship for young people, in their cultural, historical, religious and gender diversity. Each Table brings with it different values, purposes and possibilities.
The educational activities had the general aim of transmitting to the students the importance of the role of European institutions and the founding values that each of them preserves and respects, guaranteeing them to all the European citizens. In this respect, a further aim was the valorisation of the institutional funds preserved in the Historical Archives of the European Union through the use of the sources preserved therein with the purpose of activating a process of appropriation and re-elaboration of the values and ideas upon which the European institutions were founded.
The students had the opportunity to learn more about the functions of the European institutions through the didactical materials prepared by the Educational Programme. Taking inspiration from the fundamental values of the European Union (human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law, human rights), targeted activities were proposed to revisit each one.
The methodologies used were the following:
- Multidisciplinarity: use of nonverbal, musical, artistic, theatrical language.
- Experimental sensorial integration work.
- Primary source work: reading and analysis of different types of archival material (paper documents, posters, photographs, videos).
- Individual and group work; peer education and cooperative learning.
