Abstract

Since the fall of 2021, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the drafting of the Ventotene Manifesto "For a Free and United Europe", the Historical Archives of the European Union, based on a Protocol of Agreement with the Municipality of Ventotene, have launched educational paths dedicated to the new generations of Europeans on the island, aimed at giving a sense of relevance to the words of Altiero Spinelli and Ernesto Rossi and to activate a process of appropriation of memory about the place and the historical and cultural heritage that guards this territory.
The Educational Programme of the Historical Archives of the European Union and the Municipality of Ventotene, both active in the process of European integration from the point of view of study and preservation as well as from the point of view of the dissemination of the cultural and historical European heritage, have assumed in synergy the task to contribute to the European education of the new generations, to make them maturing the awareness of being European in all its nuances and to make them understand how they can be decisive in the ongoing process of European integration.
Three years later the Agreement is still active. The activities are planned annually together with the Ventotene school teachers with the aim of giving continuity to the project.
The projects carried out by the HAEU Educational Programme with the classes of the Ventotene school are pilot projects, experimented in Ventotene and later offered by the educational team to all the schools participating to the didactical workshops at the HAEU.
The materials included in this sub-serie range from 2021 to 2024.
The HAEU, the Ventotene School and the archives of the Center for Research and Documentation on Political Confinement and Detention "Islands of Ventotene and Santo Stefano" work in synergy having as their main goal to make accessible to the new generations of Europeans from the Ventotene School the cultural, historical and artistic heritage on the European Union. In fact, not only what it is preserved in archives or museums belongs to the cultural and historical heritage, but also the new collections of memories collected on the Island.
The programme envisages a path in the field of European civic education that considers the historical and cultural heritage of the Ventotene Island and of the community who inhabits it. A further aim of the programme is the valorisation of the institutional and private fonds preserved in the Historical Archives of the European Union. This valorisation takes place using the sources preserved in the HAEU to activate a process of appropriation and re-elaboration of values and ideas that underlie the European integration process.
