Peace in Middle East – Israel has no viable partner. Both sides destined to accept "Quartet Position". Yasser Arafat (PLO) failed in rejecting Clinton’s peace plan at Camp David.
22/10: Shimon Peres press conference: 3 criticisms of EP (1) Why did EP accept call to end to association with Israel (2) EP was initiator of "land for peace" – Israel gave land but didn’t get peace (3) it doesn’t understand why Palestinians go the terror route. What are they fighting for? The EU can’t help them until they help themselves first. During the Qs & As – Pottering: What should the EU position be on rebuilding of Palestinian Governance?
25/10: Brussels European Council Summit, press conference – Anders Fogh Rasmussen (President of European Council), Prodi (President of European Commission), Solana (EU High Representative): accord given to EP and Commission to conclude important decisions with regards to enlargement. Financial package agreed upon - Structural funds and cohesion funds; Turkish accession – progress made
6/11 : Cox interviewed by Gerry Foley, Tyne-Tees TV: UK turnout for EP elections extraordinarily low – among people feeling of disengagement. UK at heart of Europe
