Abstract

29/4: Seminar on racism: Pat Cox talks about dramatic new developments in Irish society. Results of French Presidential Elections. Cox says there must be no compromise on basic values. Seminar aimed at raising consciousness. Refers to "Cork Civic Forum: One City, many Communities". Work of European Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia (Vienna)
5/5: Reaction to "Observer" Article based on unpublished report on macro-economic issues. No balance in article as only Eurosceptic MEP is cited
7/5: Cox discussions with Michael Emerson, former EU Ambassador to Russia and at that time Senior Research Fellow at the Brussels-based think-tank CEPS [et al.] on Cyprus – efforts to find agreement. Greek Cypriots adhere to advice from Athens. Commission not particularly active on conflict aspect as UN’s competence. Commission tends to be anti-Turkey. Javier Solana, European Union's High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, has not yet entered fray. [Cox] says it’s a mistake to wave economic carrots at Turk Cypriots. Turk Cypriots don’t trust EU
9/5: Meeting between Cox and Glafcos Clerides, President of Cyprus on discussions between the latter and Rauf Denktash, the Turkish Cypriot leader, 3 years previously. Discussion on current state of affairs and respect for UN Resolution. Cox says that in 2002 there exists a compelling deadline. It appears that Denktash/Ankara position is that until they get date for starting negotiations for Turkey’s accession to EU that they will not move on Cyprus. Denktash can’t accept EU participation in search for solution as Greece in EU but Turkey not.
9/5: Meeting between Cox and Denktash (RD): as European Parliament (EP) President open to dialogue. RD says prejudice of EP already exists. Can’t accept mandate from Commission. Government of Cyprus cannot be government of Turkish Cypriots unless a partnership of equality is established
9/5: Cox at Ataturk Cultural Center: the future of Cyprus in the EU must speak with one voice
9/5: Press conference on Cyprus: EU will take account with new UN Secretary General on how talks went
10/5: Cox meeting with Riccardo Ribera, member of his cabinet on the assassination of Pim Fortuyn, Dutch far-right politician
10/5: Cox meeting with Raquel de Vicente, member of his cabinet on immigration policy
10/5: Cox meeting with Alvaro Desoto, UN envoy on Cyprus
14/5: Dinner Cox between Giorgio Napolitano [and others]: Members’ statute. Key relationships between the PPE-PES-LIB in EP
15/5 : Cox discussions with Peter Hain, British politican: Cyprus and Convention. Hain says the UK doesn’t see President of the Commission as political leader. UK happy to look at extension of qualified majority voting. Huge credibility problem with the legitimacy of the EU institutions. Cox refers to a document by Tommaso Padoa Schioppa, Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank, which led main political families to support the idea of an elected [Commission] President
15/5: Cox press briefing: shift to right in Europe – protest vote
