Aspects of conservation considered include: restoration; traffic planning; both harmonious and incongruous new construction; the pressures of tourism. It is a visual catalogue of the great achievements of European architecture, and a review of Europe's physical heritage both cultural and natural. Examples of how it has been ruined by planners and examples of how it has been sympathetically preserved.
