Content and Structure
United States space science and NASA missions dominated space research in the 1970’s. The European space science community therefore decided to establish a committee which could cover all aspects of space research (space sciences, microgravity research, space physics, planetary sciences, astronomy, Earth sciences).
The committee first appeared in 1974 as the European Provisional Advisory Committee for Space Research, and one year later as an independent advisory committee under the European Science Foundation (ESF) - but as Standing Committee of the ESF in 1979 - which in 1991 was named the European Space Science Committee (ESSC).
ESSC collaborates with the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Commission, national space agencies and the ESF Member Organisations.
