Context
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was established in May 1993. Cassese was elected President in November 1993 and he held this position for two mandates until 1997; as first president he managed to formulate the jurisdictional bases for the development of the Tribunal. Following this he became judge of one of the trial chambers from 1998 to 1999, when he resigned.
Content and Structure
The file contains administrative and institutional letters and correspondence concerning the Tribunal’s activities. There are also some press cuttings and two documents entitled "Reconstruction en ex-Yougoslavie: Gestion de l`aide de l`Union Europeenne et coordination de l`aide internationale" and the "Memorandum" dated 2nd January 1997 addressed to the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, from the President of Republika Srpska, Biljana Plavsic.
The last dossier concerns Cassese`s resignation and contains some letters and the speech made by Claude Jorda on that occasion.
