Content and Structure
The course aims to train teachers of all educational levels for a conscious transmission of European citizenship to the new generations. "What does it mean for me to be European today?" This question is answered through moments of thematic analysis, meetings, discussions, workshops and practical activities. The course develops around the central theme of heritage education, in its broadest sense of cultural heritage. Heritage education has been understood in Europe, starting from the post-war period, as a resource for constructing a common conscience, based on education for values of peace, tolerance and diversity. Starting from the historical and cultural heritage preserved at the HAEU, the history of the European integration process is reconstructed following a double track: that of the official history linked to the main events of European history, and that of the personal history related to men and women who with their choices and initiatives played a decisive role in this process. The Archive, from a place of storage and collection of documents, becomes an open space for discussion, a place in which to discover an infinite wealth of stories.
The course aims at:
- Explaining the European integration process through engaging and innovative activities.
- Using archival sources for educational activities related to the European citizenship.
- Having a better understanding of the EU institutions and their functioning.
- Raising awareness of the EU's impact on the daily lives of its citizens.
- Promoting common European values and heritage.
- Promoting a collaborative and supportive attitude in a multicultural environment.
During the course, teachers will explore a participatory methodological approach to read the historical sources by using the didactical materials created by the HAEU Educational Programme. Furthermore, they will share inclusive good practices, simulation activities and creative learning methods; they will create activities that promote effective debate and critical thinking about awareness of one's place in history and what it means to be a European citizen today.
The preparatory activities were supported by the following didactical materials, provided by the HAEU Educational Programme team:
- Description sheet for the narration of the story of a family object particularly significant for the participants.
