Content and Structure
As a preparatory activity, the visiting students chose some family objects significant for them and they described the objects filling up the template prepared by the HAEU Educational Programme (13 bilingual description in English and Italian). With the purpose of helping the students to grasp and understand the relationship that exists between their own personal history and the wider European history, the team of the Educational Programme selected some of the historical sources preserved at the HAEU which somehow had a link with the objects chosen by the students. The Finnish former MEP Anneli Jäätteenmäki participated to the workshop, in the context of the collaboration between the HAEU Educational Programme and the Former Member Association of the European Parliament. Two students collectively introduced their class to the guest. The students decided to introduce the class drawing a tree. They argued that the roots and the trunk of the tree symbolized their growing up together. The shoots represented their classmates who had abandoned them. They explained that the number of the fruits of the tree was equivalent to the number of the students in the class. The former MEP introduced herself through a family object: a collection of history books. The former MEP then had a conversation with the students, talking with them about the importance of making the younger generations aware of the history and functioning of the European Union, of how the European Parliament works and of her memories and experiences in the institution. At the end of the workshop, the former MEP was invited to choose a musical interlude to be listened with the class. opting for the song 'Waterloo' by Abba,
