Custodial History

Dr. Günter Burghardt deposited the originals of his archives for the years 1960-2014 at the HAEU in the autumn of 2019, under the terms of a deposit contract signed between the depositor and the HAEU, represented by the Director Dieter Schlenker.

Content and Structure

Abstract

The fonds reflects Dr. Günter Burghardt's lengthy career at the European Commission (1970 to 2004). It is composed of material both collected and produced by GB during his professional activities at the Commission of the European Community/Communities/Union in different positions with various core responsibilities and working areas in Foreign and especially Transatlantic relations.
It includes documents created in the context of the varied nature of GB's work such as official notes and reports, administrative documents, speeches, press clippings, papers and publications. Materials relating to GB's academic and advisor activities from 2005 to 2012 as well as the memoirs of his professional career and the chronicle of his family (2019) are equally part of the fonds.
The fonds provides an invaluable insight into the External relations of the Commission and in particular in the Transatlantic relations with the United States of America.

System of Arrangement

The arrangement maintained basically the original order established by GB. Some files have been split in yearly units in order to allow yearly disclosure.
The fonds is composed of paper materials, some electronic files and photographs.
The Transatlantic documentation and various other material gathered by GB and selected for retention, has been inserted in the relevant thematic context.

Access Conditions

The fonds is open for consultation according to the 30 year rule governing access to the archives of the European Institutions. Documents not produced by the Europen Instituions are open for consultation.
