On 24th May 1983, twelve European countries signed a Convention for the creation of an international organisation called EUMETSAT, whose main purpose was to establish, maintain and operate European systems of operational meteorological satellites. In early 1985, an Interim Unit for preparation of agreement ruled under the Chairmanship of Mr. Deloz (Spain).
