Context
The Alumni Association was created on 18 May 1986.
Early tentative steps to create a EUI alumni association started in 1978: yet despite the initiative was wery welcomed by the President of the EUI at that time, Max Kohnstamm, the initiative was not imediately acted upon. In 1980 the Statute of the association was still being discussed. Also the decision regarding the headquarters of the Association was not taken immediately (Florence, Brussels and Luxemburg were the candidates): yet in the end Florence seemed the preferable option.; The Association was officially born on 18 May 1986, a date that coincided with the ten-year anniversary celebrations of the Institute. The First Alumni Weekend was held on the 16-18 May 1986 at the Badia Fiesolana and during the General Assembly the Statutes of the associaition were approved and the Executive committee was nominated. The EUI recognized the full autonomy of the Association but committed itself to providing material and logistic support to the Association. The Association placed great emphasis on close collaboration with the Institute and participation in its activities. Over the years the Statute undergo several changes. The administrative organ of the Association has been de facto the Executive Committee, a body nominated evey two years of five members, each of whom carries out specific functions. It generally meets at least once a year, in concomitance with the General Assembly.
The primary objective of the Association is to maintain links between the Alumni and the Institute. This objective over the years has been performed in different ways: the creation of an Alumni Directory, the creation of a webstite for the Association, the issue of a newsletter, the several social and cultural events organized (Alumni weekends, trips, walks, conferences, publications, study grants and prizes).
