From 1966 to 1969, Christiaan Timmermans worked as a legal secretary at the Court of Justice, and subsequently, from 1969 to 1977, as an official of the European Commission. He was Professor of European law at the University of Groningen from 1977 to 1989 until being appointed Deputy Director-General of the Legal Service of the European Commission (1989-2000). He held this position until being elected as a judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union in 2000.
