Context

Administrative and Biographical History

The Bill has passed all its stages in the Lords, and had entered the Commons. An Early Day Motion had been tabled in support of the Bill by Messrs Robin Squire, Jeff Rooker and Paddy Ashdown. The Bill sought to extend to Great Britain the proportional representation system already existing in Northern Ireland. Such a reform would remove the serious anomaly of Great Britain alone in the Community not electing Members of the European Parliament (EP) according to the balance of votes case in the election. It would strengthen the coherence and legitimacy of the EP
