Meeting between Martin Schulz, Leader of Party of European Socialists in EP and Markus Winkler, head of Schulz’s office: how to define and possibly limit the powers of Klaus Welle when he becomes Secretary General of the EP.
Meeting with François Fillon, French PM on COSAC - talks of need of co decision on CFSP with EP
Meeting with Paul Heardman, who was responsible for relations with the EP at the UK permanent representative on amending regulations on (1) Balance of Payments, (2) Climate Change and (3) Thoughts on the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC)
Further discussion on position of Secretary General of the EP. Need to decide together with Klaus Welle on structures to increase efficiency in the EP administration
Meeting with Permanent Representatives/COREPER; Surprise that Hans-Gert Pöttering, European Parliament President wasn’t invited to Summit . Meeting with Pierre Sellal, France’s former Permanent Representative to the EU and other Member’s Ambassadors and Danish Ambassador on financial crisis and balance of payments, climate change and Lisbon Treaty, Elections and the statute for assistants; Participation at Policy Network Meeting in London with main speakers Peter Mandelson and Joseph Nye: election of Obama, global, financial crisis, EU-US collaboration in dealing with climate change, Europe must make greater contribution to peace-keeping, work together to fight isolationists, embrace progressive social ideas. Need to push for Doha Deal. Nye lists Obama’s main internal priorities: cut taxes, healthcare, green jobs and education. Mandelson says EU needs to implement Lisbon Treaty.
Meeting in Cambridge. Points raise by John Eatwell on need for EU Treasury and not just a Central Bank. Criticism of capital requirement directive. Need for framework such as Worldwide Financial Authority
