Viviane Reding was Member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1999. She was in this context President of the Petitions Committee (1989-1992), Vice-President of the Committee on Social Affairs, Employment and the Working environment (1992-1994), Vice-President of the Committee for Civil Liberties and Home Affairs (1997-1999), Head of Luxembourg delegation to the EPP, and member of EPP group office. From 1999 to 2004, she was European Commissioner responsible for Education, Culture, Youth, Media and Sports. From 2004 to 2010, she was European Commissioner responsible for Information Society and Media.
