Francis Wurtz graduated in literature in 1968. In 1969 he joined the French Communist Party (PCF). Between 1969 and 1973 he worked as a teacher at a public school. In 1973 he became PCF party official and secretary of the PCF in the department of Bas-Rhin. Three years later he was appointed General Secretariat of the PCF as a political collaborator of Georges Marchais.
In 1979 Francis Wurtz was elected member of the European Parliament and remained an MEP until 2009.
