Ray MacSharry was educated at Summerhill College, Sligo. He was elected Fianna Fail Dail Deputy for Sligo Leitrim from 1969 to 1989. From 1977 to 1988 he held various Ministries, among others the Ministry for Finance. In 1982 he was governor of the European Investment Bank and was elected Member of European Parliament in 1984. He is a member of the European Council from 1984 to 1987. From 1989 to 1993 he was member of the European Commission with responsibility for Agriculture and Rural Development. He was Director of companies of the Bank of Ireland Group, Ryanair and chairman of the London City Airport. In 1999 he is appointed Director of Telecom Eireann and Chairman of the Irish Forestry Board.
