Context
The CRNO collection was deposited at the HAEU following a deposit agreement signed in June 2011 between the HAEU and István Béla Ferenc Kormoss.
Content and Structure
The collection counts 1087 items of interest distributed between cartographic maps, which make up the core, worksheets and preparatory models, these latter two often used for graphic compositions or extrapolation of data and/or evidence. The large central core consists of an extensive mapping of the territories belonging to the Conférence des régions de l'Europe du Nord-Ouest. The importance of the maps in the CRNO collections lies not only in the fact that they illustrated the new European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) area but also in his capillary survey, not only illustrates these territories on several administrative levels but also provides a broad spectrum of information concerning the evolution of trade routes, whether on wheels or rails, together with an accurate analysis of the differentiation of the productive sectors of the territories examined. The extensive range of materials enables a clear connection to be established between the final deliverables - namely, the published maps - and the preparatory elements, thereby offering a comprehensive overview of the methodology employed. This comprehensive collection encompasses a diverse array of cartographic materials, including hand-rendered sketches, thematic maps, demographic distributions, and export flow diagrams, alongside detailed delineations of frontier territories.
The inventory of the maps has been prepared by Mattia Torelli, May 2025.
The cartographic works that make up this CRNO collection arrived at the HAEU in 2011, together with the CRNO archival documents of the Conférence des régions de l'Europe du Nord-Ouest. The appraisal procedure was carried out in consideration of the large number of items in the collection, which relate to various types of territorial, demographic, and thematic analyses concerning inherent socio-economic aspects studied and developed by the cross-border body. Alongside the extensive and well-documented core of cartographic maps, there is a particularly interesting set of preparatory sheets, decal transparencies, graphic studies for maps, and supplementary material for further study and comparison. Numerous items bear the autograph signature of István Béla Ferenc Kormoss or, for example, his personal reference code. The adopted classification criterion is chronological sequencing in order to enable the identification of the collection’s evolution across the wide variety of materials. The classification is organised in five-year series which enhances the analysis of the collection’s temporal development. The series are as follows: Before 1950, 1950–1954, 1955–1959, 1960–1964, 1965–1969, 1970–1974, After 1975 and Unknown date. These series, together with detailed descriptions of individual objects, allow them to be related to and contextualized within the collection by observing cross-references and developments in specific thematic groups over several decades.
