Abstract

The Directorate of Sciences is responsible of ESA's scientific programmes, under the authority of the Director General.
Existing since the creation of ESA and its predecessor, ESRO, its denomination as well as some of its fields of expertise changed with time. It has been called Directorate of Scientific and Meteorological Programmes (1976-1985), Directorate of the Scientific Programme (1985-2009), Directorate of Science (since 2006), Directorate of Science and Robotic Exploration (2009-2016).
