Context
The "European Committee for the Prevention of Torture" (CPT) was set up by the Council of Europe’s "European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment"; the Committee organises inspections in order to assess places of detention. Cassese was elected member and then President of CPT and he carried out this task from 1989 to 1993. After this experience, he published a book entitled "Umano-Disumano. Commissariati e prigioni nell`Europa di oggi" ("Inhuman states: imprisonment and torture in Europe today") where he recounts his experience in CPT.
Content and Structure
The first dossier collects letters to support Cassese`s candidacy at CPT; the second is related to the CPT activities and contains one report and two statements by Cassese; the last comprises documentation regarding the controversy that the content of the book "Umano-disumano. Commissariati e prigioni nell`Europa di oggi" gave rise to.
