Abstract
The Uwe Kitzinger files are of paramount interest for those who are studying Britain's relationship with the EEC during the almost twenty years of negotiations between them and the referendum in 1975 to decide whether Britain should remain in the Community.
Kitzinger was a very public champion of British accession to the European Community and when Britain did join in January 1973 he was appointed the political Counsellor to the first British Vice-President of the European Commission in Brussels. Kitzinger's time working as advisor in the Cabinet of Sir Christopher Soames in the François-Xavier Ortoli Commission is also well documented in his fonds.
