Created in 1948 to allocate and distribute Marshall Plan aid and to plan for and effect a European Recovery Programme (ERP) for the countries of Western Europe, the OEEC encouraged Member States' to grow in the areas of industry, agriculture, energy and technology and contributed to freeing trade and to the convertibility of European currencies.
