From Regional Bloc to Global Hub

Over time, EFTA has transformed from a regional bloc, focused on promoting free trade among its members in the 1960s and 1970s, into the closest partner of the EU and an active player in the global economic landscape. With a lean but efficient institutional structure, EFTA’s free trade agreements now span Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, giving its citizens and businesses access to one of the most extensive FTA networks worldwide.

Today, EFTA represents a trading bloc of more than 14 million people with a combined GDP of EUR 1.3 trillion in 2023 and ranks among the countries with the highest GDP per capita in the world. EFTA’s trade network enhances access for EFTA companies to markets of more than a billion consumers. In 2023, EFTA’s exports and imports totalled almost EUR 1.5 billion.

Adapting to Global Challenges

EFTA continues to navigate today’s complex trade landscape – marked by digitalisation, sustainability and shifting geopolitics – while preparing its members to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s interconnected global economy. By integrating sustainability, digital trade rules and measures into its agreements that make it easier for small and medium-sized enterprises to benefit from trade, EFTA promotes open markets while supporting innovation and climate-resilient development.

Partnership and Resilience

Alongside its trade agreements, EFTA continues to play an important role in supporting its partners through targeted technical cooperation, underlining EFTA’s commitment to expanding its free trade network and enabling its partner countries – many of them developing or in transition – to benefit fully from the agreements.

Over the last 65 years, EFTA has built a reputation as a reliable partner in regional and global trade. Its resilience lies in its ability to respond quickly and decisively to economic change while promoting its members’ trade interests. This journey demonstrates how a small but agile organisation can achieve global reach, strengthen Europe’s neighbourhood and adapt to the rapidly changing global economy.
