Abstract

The late 1980's early 1990's were marked by concern over pollution from coal burning, as a result smokeless fuel was introduced which was envirnomentally friendly, however the coal industry suffered and many pits were forced to close. Gordon Adam also became involved in the investigation into dumping of Chinese, American and Columbian coal in Europe and in the UK which further damaged the British coal industry. The situation was the same in Limburg, Belgium and Germany with mine closures.
