From 1984 to 1985, Martine Reicherts worked as Administrator in the DG «Science, Research and Development», and from 1985 to 1988, in the DG «Indirect Taxation and Elimination of Tax Frontiers». From 1989 to 1990, she was Member of the Cabinet of Mr Dondelinger, in charge of "Culture and audio-visual aspects of internal market and legal questions". Between 1991 and 1992, she was Assistant to the Director-General in the DG «Internal Market and Industrial Affairs». From 1993 to 1994, she was Deputy Head of Cabinet, Cabinet of Mr Steichen, in charge of Agriculture and rural Development. Between 1995 and 1998, she was Adviser and Deputy Head of Cabinet, Cabinet of the President Jacques Santer, and was Spokesperson of the European Commission from 1998 to 1999. From 2000 to 2001, she worked as Head of the unit «Luxembourg Personnel» and acting Director, and then Director (2001-2002) of the "Administration and Personnel Management (Luxembourg & Ispra)" in the DG Personnel and Administration.
She served as a European Commissioner in the Barroso Commission, with a portfolio of Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship.
