Hannu Aapa Takkula studied music at the Tampere Conservatory. Later, he studied Education at the University of Lapland and he graduated in 1993. Takkula also holds a PhD in Education from the University of Lapland.
He worked in the music industry during the 80s. From 1992 to 1995, Takkula worked as a school teacher in Posio and, between 1990 and 1991, he was editor-in-chief of a radio station in Rovaniemi.
He started his political career in 1995 when he became a member of the Finnish Parliament for the Centre Party and served as a member of the Education and Culture Committee, Environment Committee and Foreign Affairs Committee until 2004.
Hannu Appa Takkula was elected member of the European Parliament in 2004 and he remained as an MEP until 2018. During that period, he was a member of Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, member of the national party Suomen Keskusta (Finland), member of the Committee on Culture and Education and of the Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand and Vice-chair of the Committee on Culture and Education, member of the Delegation for relations with Israel, Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, Committee on Culture and Education, Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand, Committee on Budgetary Control, Committee on International Trade, Delegation for relations with the United States and Committee on International Trade.
In 2018, he was appointed member of the European Court of Auditors for the period from 1 March 2018 to 29 February 2024.
