Claudia Roth graduated from the Simpert-Kraemer-Gymnasium in 1974. She worked as dramaturgy and assistant director at the Landestheater Schwaben in Memmingen.
She began her political career in 1985 when she became the press spokesperson for the Green Party's parliamentary group in the Bundestag. In 1989, Roth was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for Germany and she remained as an MEP until 1998. During that period she was Chair of the Green Group in the European Parliament, Vice-Chair of the Green Group in the European Parliament, member of the Green Group in the European Parliament, member of the Committee on Youth, Culture, Education, the Media and Sport, member of the Delegation to the EEC-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, member of the Committee on Civil Liberties and Internal Affairs, member of the Subcommittee on Human Rights and member of the Delegation for relations with South-east Europe.
In 1998 she was elected to the German Bundestag where she took over the chair of the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid. Three years later, Roth was appointed Federal president of Alliance 90 / The Greens. As a result, she left the Bundestag. In 2002, she was elected member of the Bundestag for Bavaria and still serves as a member of the German federal parliament. Between March 2003 and October 2004, Roth worked as Federal Commissioner for Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid. She resumed the leadership of Alliance '90/The Greens in October 2004 until October 2013 when she was appointed Vice President of the Bundestag.
