In February 1966, Giuliano Marenco joined the Council of the European Union, working in its legal service as lawyer-linguists until May 1970, and then briefly in the Council's Science and Technology Service (June to October 1970). Mr. Marenco then joined the European Commission's Legal service in 1970 and stayed in service until 2005. In this context, he first took part to the work of the agriculture team (1970-1973) and divided then these activities with his work as assistant to Deputy Director General Olmi (1973-1977). He became then assistant to Director General Ehlermann (1977-1980) and later joined the legal service's competition team (1980-1986). He was then in charge of industrial property and television in a disparate team (1986-1990) before becoming head of the competition team (1991-2001). He briefly headed the legal service's institutional team (January-April 2002) and was nominated deputy director general in May 2002, a position he held until January 2005.
