Herman Van Rompuy studied at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, where he received a Philosophy degree in 1968 and a Master's degree in Applied Economics in 1971. Between 1972 and 1975, Herman Van Rompuy worked at the Belgium Central Bank. He has been lecturer at the Handelshogeschool Antwerpen (1980–87) and at the Vlaamse Economische Hogeschool Brussels (1982–2008).
He began his political career in 1973 when he became chairman of the Flemish Christian-democratic (CVP) party’s youth council. Between 1975 and 1980, he worked as political advisor of prime minister Leo Tindemans and minister Gaston Geens (1975–80). From 1979 to 2009, Herman Van Rompuy was member of the national CVP’s board. In 1988, He served as secretary of state for finance during 5 months. The same year, he was elected to the Belgian Senate and remained as Senator until 1995. Also in 1988, he was appointed national president of the party and he served until 1993 when he became vice prime minister and minister of finance (1993–99). Herman Van Rompuy was Member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives between 1995 and 2009. From 2007 to 2008, he was also Speaker of the House of Representatives. In 2008, Herman Van Rompuy was elected President of the Belgian government. He remained in office until 2009 when he became President of the European Council for the period of 1 December 2009 until 31 May 2012. In 2012 his Presidency was renewed for a second term, from 1 June 2012 to 30 November 2014.
In 2014, Herman Van Rompuy received the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen for his EU role. One year later, he was awarded the title of Count.
