Martti Tiuri is Professor emeritus and former Member of the Finnish Parliament.
After participating to the war between Finland and Soviet Union in 1944, he studied at the University of Technology in Helsinki and received the Diploma Engineer degree in 1950. In 1955-1956 he studied at Stanford University California and received the M.S. degree (electrical engineering) in 1956. In 1960 he received the degree of the Doctor of Technology from the Helsinki University of Technology.
From 1950 to 1961 Dr Tiuri was a research engineer at the Radio Laboratory of the Technical Research Centre of Finland, Helsinki, working with microwave radar systems, radar receivers and antennas. From 1961 to 1962, he was a visiting professor at the Radio Observatory of the Ohio State University, Columbus. From 1962 to 1989 he was a professor of the Radio Engineering at the Helsinki University of Technology. In 1970-1975 he was a Research Professor at the Finnish Academy.
Dr. Tiuri´s research activities included antennas, microwave radiometers, remote sensing, and industrial applications of microwaves. In 1968 Dr. Tiuri was elected a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for contributions to the theory and techniques of microwave radiometers and microwave applications in remote sensing and industrial instrumentation. Dr Tiuri has published over one hundred scientific articles. He has over 40 patents in the field of radio engineering and electronics.
Dr. Tiuri has been a chairman of the Finnish URSI (International Union on Radio Science) Committee (1966-1991), chairman of the Finnish National COSPAR (Committee for Space Research) from 1969 to 1990. He has been a board member of several Finnish electronics and publishing companies. He has been a member of the Supervisory Board of the Finnish Broadcasting company (1987-2003).
Dr. Tiuri is a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, a member of the Finnish Academy of Technical Sciences, a member of the International Academy of Astronautics and a honorary member of the Association of the Electronics Engineers in Finland.
Dr. Tiuri has also been a member of the Parliament of Finland (1983-2003) representing the national coalition party (a conservative-liberal party). In the parliament he was the chairman of the Committee for the Future (1996-2003) and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. He was a member of the Finnish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (1989-2003). In CE he was the vice chairman of the Committee on Science and Technology (1997-2000) and the chairman of the Subcommittee on Science Policy and Ethics (1998-2000). He was the vice chairman of the Subcommittee on Science and Ethics in 2003. He has been a chairman of the Finish Association of MP`s and Scientists (1973-1975 and 1983-2003).
During his political career he has published several books concerning the visions of the future of Finland and the world (“Future begins now” in 1984, “Finland on the way to the future” in 1986, “Possibilities of the Earth” in 1990 and “The Future is different” in 1999).
