Sir Tickell was educated at the Westminister School and later at Christchurch, Oxford, he entered the Diplomatic Service in 1954 and served in The Hague and Mexico in the Foregin Office Planning Section.
In 1964 he was dispatched to the British Embassy, Paris. From 1972-75, he was appointed Private Secretary to Ministers responsible for UK entry to EC.
From 1972-1975 he was Head of the Western Dept., Foreign Office and from 1977-1981 he was nominated Chef de Cabinet to Roy Jenkins, President of the Commission of EC.
From 1981-83, he is british Ambassador to Mexico and then from 1984 to 1987, permanent Secretary of the Overseas Development Administration.
From 1987-90, he is british Ambassador to the UN and until 1997 is Warden of Green College, Oxford.
