Gerard Coad Smith, diplomat and expert on atomic energy, disarmament and non-proliferation matters, served at the US State Department as assistant to Commissioner Murray at the Atomic Energy Commission (1950-1954), as special assistant to the Secretary of State for Atomic Energy Affairs (1955) and as Assistant Secretary for policy planning (1957-1958). He was the chief US delegate to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) in 1969 and the first US Chairman of the Trilateral Commission.
